Originally called The Good Companions, The Wednesday Club was founded in 1977 and used to operate from The Umhlali Country Club, where a team of 30 ladies managed a number of outreach programmes.
Club members would assist less fortunate people by donating food and blankets purchased with funds raised from morning markets, fashion and flower shows, and even cooking shows.
With a motto of ‘help us to help others’, the charity organisation currently consists of 20 members and continues to support a number of charities and other worthy causes such as Vision 153, Stanger’s General Gizenga Mpanza Hospital, St Luke’s Home and the Westbrook Retirement Village.
“We are a dedicated and caring group enjoying the fellowship of helping those in need,” said member and former chairperson, Di Bowser.
The club operated in the area from the Lower Tugela to Umdloti River.
If you would like to learn more about the club and how you can contribute, join its monthly meeting on the last Wednesday of the month at the Ballito Library at 9am.
