Shakaskraal flooding of CBD believed to be caused by illegal connections

The illegal connection of storm water pipes into the sewer system has been causing recurring flooding in Shakaskraal.

The problem has become so bad that during heavy rain it is near impossible to navigate the CBD on foot.

This has been an issue for years and is steadily worsening over time.

Ward councillor Dooshie Govender claims that homes from Protea Heights, Mellowood and Millview are guilty of connecting their storm water pipes into the sewer line, which is unable to cope with the amount of water rushing into the system.

He said the transport department, KwaDukuza municipality and Siza Water have been working together to fix the problem.

“Hopefully by March we will have relief. I am trying my utmost to resolve this issue. I can assure all affected businesses that this will soon be a thing of the past,” said Govender.

Siza Water public relations officer, Khosi Mathenjwa, confirmed the reason for the blockages “We plead with homeowners to remove these illegal connections. If they are found guilty a fine of about R18 000 will be levied in terms of the water and sanitation by-laws. “Siza Water is also investigating upgrading certain parts of the sewer network in Shakaskraal to improve the services,” said Mathenjwa.
