KZN to do away with low-level bridges
KZN premier Sihle Zikalala visited the iLembe district with Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC, Nelisiwe Nkonyeni, to inspect damaged road infrastructure in the district.
The KwaZulu-Natal government has decided to do away with low-level bridges in future as they are easily washed away and dangerous to cross during flooding.
This was said by KZN premier Sihle Zikalala when addressing residents in Osindisweni on Thursday, January 13.
Zikalala visited the iLembe district with Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC, Nelisiwe Nkonyeni, to inspect damaged road infrastructure in the district.
The region was one of the most affected by the recent storms, particularly Ndwedwe and KwaMaphumulo. Many roads and bridges have been washed away, causing severe disruptions.
The inspections included the P711 causeway in KwaMaphumulo, the P712 road in Ndwedwe, D2312 causeway in Ndwedwe and P713 bridge connecting Ndwedwe and Osindisweni.
In some areas, community members lost their lives trying to cross the low-level bridges during floods.
