Famous Joy Dogs give Ballito a visit

Three fluffy and energetic bundles of joy best known for their acting roles in paint company Dulux’s television advertisements, the Joy Dogs, are in town doing the rounds spreading cheer.

The Courier caught up with them and their owner, Sue Green of Johannesburg, to learn more about these beautiful Old English Sheepdogs.

Before lockdown restrictions stopped them, Sue and her dogs visited schools to teach children how to be responsible pet owners, as well as retirement homes to serve as emotional support animals for the elderly.

Sue founded the Joy Dogs organisation about 14 years ago and has always had the intention of making people happy through her dogs.

They are trained from as young as 3 months to do a variety of tricks.

Among others, they can jump through hoops and even ‘read’. Orion and Yola love to show off their smarts, reading commands such as sitting or laying down.

In another test, the dogs are asked their ages and they bark it out.

Old English Sheepdogs are quite an expensive breed, costing more than R50 000 per dog, and they require a lot of care and grooming.

Daily grooming can take up to an hour per dog, so Sue definitely has her hands full. But she said she loves spending time with her fur balls.
