KwaDukuza’s Menzi champions the cause of the disabled
In an effort to identify people living with disabilities and who needed help, Menzi launched his non-profit in 2018 and has been giving people the gift of mobility ever since.
Equipping the disabled and providing them the opportunity to live lives as full and meaningful as the able-bodied, is all in a day’s work for KwaDukuza-born Menzi Nxumalo.
As founder of non-profit organisation Nokusa Support for Disabled People, Menzi has his eyes firmly set on raising awareness about the needs of people living with disabilities, something he achieves through a number of awareness efforts.
One such was held outside the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Sunday, where Menzi called for more jobs to be created for youth living with disabilities and for their education needs to be addressed.
“Not every disabled person needs a wheelchair or a walking stick. They need jobs, just like you and I. These people want to be farmers, run their own companies or even go into modelling,” he said.
“But we cannot give them that if we still cannot open doors or speak freely about disability,” Menzi said.
His campaign for the disabled began a few years ago when he challenged himself to use a friend’s wheelchair to get around a shopping centre.
He was horrified at how difficult it was.
In an effort to identify people living with disabilities and who needed help, Menzi launched his non-profit in 2018 and has been giving people the gift of mobility ever since.
He also does skills development in townships and rural areas.
“My aim is to show people with disabilities that their legs may not work, but their hands and minds do, so there is no stopping them from following their dreams.”
He said there were a great number of people waiting for wheelchairs on their database and they would appreciate any donations of new or used chairs.
