Mandeni man’s long walk to Soweto to promote peace
This is not the first time the 30-year-old takes part in peace initiatives and he is not unfamiliar with the route, having cycled from Maponya Mall in Soweto to South Beach, Durban last year to create awareness about gender-based violence.
A Mandeni social activist and musician walking from Durban to Soweto to promote peace, stopped over in Ballito last Thursday.
Siyanda Dlamini said he wants to promote peace and stability after the violent unrest last July.
His journey also serves to raise awareness about gender-based violence.
“Without peace, economic growth cannot be achieved and if we do not grow economically, the unemployment rate will continue to escalate, along with crime and other social ills,” said the Afro jazz artist.
He estimates it will take him three weeks to reach Soweto.
Dlamini is being seconded by a video production crew filming his journey. They will stop at heritage sites, which he hopes to highlight.
“I’m not moving at a fast pace, but rest assured, I will be in Gauteng in three weeks’ time,” he said with confidence.

Before that the long distance traveller also cycled from Mandeni to Eswatini in a call for calm in the neighbouring country.
