Determined Dristi wins senior SPAR Star 2021 competition

Determination and compassion for her community are the attributes that ensured St Henry’s Marist College learner Dristi Moodley was named overall winner in the high school category of the KwaZulu-Natal SPAR Superstar competition.

Moodley was all smiles as she collected her prize, a R5 000 voucher from SPAR on January 24.

Last year, as a Grade 8 learner, Moodley was determined to swim the aQuellé Midmar Mile for charity. Despite Covid-19 challenges, she took to her school pool and completed a whopping 60 laps (1 600m) to raise R3 000 for the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation.

“I’ve lost several family and friends to cancer, so I wanted to honour them by swimming for CHOC,” said Dristi.

While swimming, she needed to maintain her pace and avoid swimming too fast.

“I’m very excited about the voucher I won, and I’m also excited that I won this by doing fundraising.”

With her winnings, Moodley will buy some of the international candy imported by SPAR.

School principal Stephen Leech commended Moodley on her determination.

“She really deserves this prize after all the effort she has put in. We are very proud of her commitment and achievement. She swam by herself and put in the work needed.

“We could see she was really determined to fulfill the commitment. We are really pleased when we see our learners do well in the competition and we will definitely be entering more learners in this year’s SPAR Superstar competition,” he said.

Caxton Community Newspapers Durban business manager, Nicole Vosser, said the SPAR Superstar competition was a way to give children such as Moodley a platform to shine.

“By giving this opportunity to schools and their learners, it really opens up more doors for them. As community newspapers, we need to showcase more of what our young children are doing because they are the future. Through our sponsorship with SPAR KZN, we have a wonderful opportunity to highlight learners’ talents and showcase them to the community at large,” Vosser said.

SPAR KwaZulu-Natal’s advertising and sponsorship manager, Nozipho Mkhize, echoed these sentiments, and said she was impressed by Moodley’s initiative.

“As SPAR, impacting other people’s lives and making a difference is at the centre of what we do as a business. We are not just a food business, we want to support our customers as they support us.

Distri has shown some great qualities in terms using her talents to make a difference in her community,” said Mkhize.
