Hitting the road for children is all in a day’s work for these bikers

Seeing the joy on the faces of underprivileged children being helped with surgery keeps on motivating executive director and founder of Pediatric Care Africa, Dr Andre Hattingh, and his friends to undertake motorbike expeditions to raise funds for lifesaving surgeries.

Now in its fourth year, the ‘Ride for a Child’ initiative is the brainchild of Dr Hattingh, who visits orphanages around the country to create awareness and raise funds.

This year 70 surgeries are lined up and each is crucial to either saving a life or improving it beyond measure.

While the main goal of the bikers is to raise awareness and funds, they also collect and distribute toys and food.

Joined by Lazyja Steyn, Hannes Steyn and Willie Geel this year, Hattingh and his team have been on the road since February 13, covering a distance of more than 7 000km from White River to Durban.

Sponsors donate R1 for every kilometer they travel.

The four goodwill champions made a pit stop in Ballito last Wednesday on their way to Durban’s St Thomas Home for Children.

Children were allowed to ride with the bikers and were also awarded badges for doing so.
