A burst pipe which led to a number of other issues, has left Westbrook residents without water for 4 days.

On Sunday morning a main water pipe feeding Westbrook and Westbrook beach burst just outside the main entrance of Crawford International North Coast school.

“On Monday, an eThekwini plumber arrived and it was understood that everything had been fixed, yet the water did not return,” said Ward 56 councillor, Geoff Pullan.

A leak persisted, which meant no water pressure built up in the pipe and most residents remained with dry taps, he said.

“A TLB was dispatched, later digging a large hole which seemingly damaged the sewerage line which then also needed repairing.”

To compound the issue, silt and soil found its way into the main Westbrook reservoir, which also needed to be cleaned before restoring the supply.

“We are pleased to announce the repairs on the pipework have been completed. Our teams are busy with the cleaning of the Westbrook reservoir,” said eThekwini Metro spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela.

In the interim, until water is restored fully, an alternate supply link has been used.

“They have engaged a system from the 1980s, but still the pressure is not sufficient. Given the lack of pressure, homes at lower levels along the beach are getting some water, albeit just a weak stream,” said Pullan.

Mayisela confirmed that homes at higher elevation will experience a delay in receiving water supply.

“Teams are on site currently and water tankers are being dispatched to the areas that are still without water,” he said.

No timeframe was given for when full supply would return.
