Crawford College recently toasted a handful of their pupils for becoming the latest graduates of Toastmasters 2015.
Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development and the course seeks to instill confidence in pupils through the art of public speaking. Overseen by Crawford’s Toastmaster’s Youth Leadership Coordinator, Dinesh Maharaj and supported by a team of Crawford staff including English teacher Simone Johnson – the course teaches young people to communicate effectively and with clear meaning.
“Every leader’s journey begins with a single speech. The world needs leaders as leaders head families, motivate teams, oversee businesses and inspire others,” said Johnson, who added that leadership positions require an individual to be able to deliver speeches, receive feedback as well as encourage and guide others to achieve their own goals.
Luyanda Malevu, Njabulo Mkhabela, Tarryn Loots and Unathi Chiliza successfully completed Crawford’s Toastmasters’ course after a fulfilling journey of self-discovery.
During the course, the pupils learnt to tell narratives, to listen and respond appropriately in pressurised situations, to plan effectively, and to both give and receive feedback in order to understand other people’s points of view.
Johnson said that the students themselves acknowledged that the course has “built their self-confidence” and resulted in “personal growth”, in addition to reminding them of the importance of integrity and respect for others.
