Much to the relief of a rural community in Ndwedwe, a future of learning and fun is on its way – coming in the form of a container.
Believing that success stems from a good pre-school education, Build the Future recently acquired land in Ndwedwe and plans to set up containers to provide meals and an education to underprivileged children from the area.
Clive Wetherill from Build the Future said the organisation started in 2006. One of their first projects was to set up a pre-school in the Kya Sand community, Gauteng, situated alongside an informal settlement, home to about 30 000 people.
“There were three thousand children wandering the streets daily. The Pre-school currently holds 85 children.
“The idea behind this is to help where we can by getting the children “school ready” and nourished at the same time. We charge a fee of R50 per month and this fee is purely for the parents commitment. A lot of folk cannot afford this, however, we accommodate them anyway. The children receive two meals a day, education and play to give them balance. Vegetable garden planting plays a major role in our projects. Planting the gardens to the crop is fulfilling. The children and their parents eat out of the garden,” said Wetherill.
Wetherill has asked that people get involved in supporting the project.
“We have one container and we have managed to already clear the land. We have a wish list that we would like to circulate to local business which includes containers, playground equipment, fencing, borehole if possible, little tables and chairs, chalk board and stationary. We rely on community involvement and them taking ownership of their project.”
Build the Future would like to see many similar pre-schools all over Ndwedwe once the first one has been successfully established.
