Mandeni mayor, Cllr Sphesihle Zulu, visited some of Mandeni’s top matric achievers on Saturday.
Zulu congratulated both Joshua Pillay, who received eight distinctions, and Perm Mthethwa, who received seven – saying that hard work pays off.
He also offered a word of caution for pupils now in matric.
“Some learners are focusing on the wrong things,” said the mayor.
“Too many of them are busy with boys or girls at school instead of working hard to achieve better results.”
“Some are even busy taking drugs, which is something that hinders the learner’s progress at school.”
Mthethwa will be heading to UKZN to study agricultural science, while Pillay will tackle physics at Wits University.
Mark Pillay, Joshua’s father, encouraged the matriculants to always strive to do their best.

Meanwhile Olga Yeyeni, Mthethwa’s mother, said that her daughter’s achievement took a lot of effort.
“I am thankful for my daughter’s progress,” said Yeyeni.
“We had many sleepless nights because of study groups that Perm had with other pupils here at home. Her progress didn’t come out of nowhere – it was because of all the hard work she did.”
“In conclusion,” said the mayor, “I would like to congratulate both learners for hoisting Ilembe’s flag and doing their part in putting Mandeni on the map.”
