Realising that education is a priority and not an option, the KwaDukuza council donated R490000 toward a student bursary scheme allowing 98 deserving KwaDukuza students to pay a part of their university registration fees.
KDM mayor Ricardo Mthembu was proud to announce last Wednesday that the number of students receiving funding has increased by 17 from last years 81 to this years 98.
“The bursary scheme will assist both new and returning tertiary students. Each student will receive R5 000 towards their studies and this money will be paid directly to the university,” he said.
Over joyed 19-year-old Ntobile Shani who will be studying biotechnology at the Durban University of Technology said that she appreciates KDM’s contribution toward her studies.
“University fees are expensive and it is sad to work hard at school and not be able to study further. I have applied for student funding but while I wait for a response, my registration fees still has to be paid. The R5000 will really help,” she said.
KDM’s student bursary scheme started in 2012 to help those who came from underprivileged homes to get their foot in the door at universities.

Mthembu encouraged the students to not throw the opportunities they were afforded away.
“Students need to fight for their diplomas and their degrees. You can disappoint your friends but try not to disappoint your parents. While we are giving you an opportunity, your success is up to you. Education is not a process of life, it is life itself.”
Touching on the Ilembe district’s dismal matric performance, Mthembu advised parents to play an active role in their children’s education.
“We are ashamed of last year’s matric results. I am worried about parents. Where are they? Why are they not angry? Do not spoil your children and destroy their future.”
