Keeping Shakaskraal Primary environmentally friendly

Being taught in class about the importance of keeping the environment clean, Lusanda thought it would be great if her school could lead by example

Teaching a child to take care of the environment is one thing, but when that child looks you in the eye and says ‘enough talking, it’s time for action’ – the emotion is overwhelming.

Eleven-year-old Lusanda Nobomvu from Shakaskraal SA Primary School continuously asked her teachers for a recycling project to be started at her school.

Being taught in class about the importance of keeping the environment clean, Lusanda thought it would be great if her school could lead by example by recycling all the waste generated at the school.

“We were only recycling paper at the school. We collect the paper and a recycling company collects them and gives us toilet paper,” said deputy principal Thulile Mncube.

However, Mncube said the plucky Lusanda said “This is not enough miss, why don’t we recycling bottles and plastics? Can’t we collect all this for our school?”

So her teachers had to find metal drums to start the project.

Lusanda was quite shy talking to The Courier, but her teacher, Lindokuhle Zungu, said she was a very bright pupil.

“She is doing very well academically and she is very active and has pride in her school. She recently asked me to buy floor polish so that she and her friends can clean their classroom,” said Zungu.

Mncube said they are looking for recycling companies that will collect the bottles and plastics.

“The company that we are working with collects papers and we get toilet paper in exchange, so now we need other companies to help us with something else in exchange for the bottles and plastics,” said Mncube.

If you can help contact Mncube at 032-9472941.
