Pupils from Victoria Primary school in Tongaat created a special formation to wish struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada well before he died this morning (Tuesday).
The 87-year-old, who was known as “Uncle Kathy”, passed away peacefully after a short period of illness, following surgery to the brain.
Kathrada’s political career started when he was only 17 years old. After numerous arrests during the apartheid era, he spent more than 26 years on Robben Island when he was incarcerated alongside several other ANC activists, including Nelson Mandela.
He was one of the last remaining Rivonia triallists.
