About 360 young girls from Darnall and Tongaat were given the gift of dignity after recently receiving reusable sanitary pads.
Forming part of the Project Dignity initiative, teenagers from Darnall Secondary and Nkosimbomvu Secondary school received the much-needed necessities that so many girls from underprivileged areas are forced to go without.
As a result, these young girls will no longer miss valuable days at school.
The distribution was made possible by the fundraising efforts of Marion Spence through Rotary USA.
Nkobongo community donation
A number of women from Nkobongo also received a generous donation of sanitary pads from local resident, Thandi Mthiyane.
Mthiyane, who is the driver of Umusa Kamanase Community Support Organisation said the pads would last the girls up to four months.
“We want to do this every three months, because some of these girls have no parents and those who have parents are unemployed,” said Mthiyane.
She also spoke to the women about the importance of safe sex and the responsibilities involved.
“You must understand that there are many consequences should you have unprotected sex.
“These include teen pregnancy, HIV and Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases.”
Representatives from the Social Welfare department also spoke to the girls and told them about the services the department has on offer.
