In response to Seamus Thompson’s letter, the first point I wish to raise is man is one of the top predators in the world. Domesticated cats certainly are not. (‘Cats are world’s top predators’, Courier, October 4)
Our steadily dwindling rhino population is just one example and in the not too distant future one will have only picture books to remember these magnificent animals by. Sad but true. Elephants are facing the same fate.
Secondly, it’s obvious Thompson has got his nipples in a knot and must hate cats. So what if a domesticated cat covers 42 hectares roaming around the countryside at night eating up the snake population whilst its owner sleeps. So what if cats wander, and I quote from his letter, “Yowling, sniffing, and checking the neighbourhood and killing with deadly force. Restrict the movements of cats as they are remorseless killers and put bells around their necks.”
What utter rubbish. Our cat comes and goes as he sees fit. He has his own bedroom with sea views. He is the ruler of our household and we love him dearly. And he is not a snake eater. You don’t own a cat by the way. A cat owns you!
Seamus old boy, invest in a cat. Your life will change and you will become a happier person, I assure you. Ask anyone who owns a cat.
