Ward changes will affect voters

Rodney Mattheys expressed his concerns about Ward changes and voting rules.

I believe I should share with you something I only became aware of when I visited the Townsend Park voting station on Saturday.

I have been resident in Zimbali for 11 years and have been a registered voter since then.

Purely out of interest I went to check that I was still registered.

The IEC official informed me that Ballito used to have two wards and these had been increased to five and that we had been moved to a new ward. To vote next year, we would have to re-register. We did fill in the forms and got the barcode.

The real worry is that we were told that if we had NOT re-registered we would not have been allowed to vote in the next election.

I am sure that most voters in the previous two wards are not aware of this and happily assume they are registered though they are now in a new ward. As with me, I thought only new voters and those that had relocated needed to register.

This could have a major impact on voters next year.
