I would be grateful if you were able to let your readers know that there are still some organisations that go more than the extra mile.
On Thursday, December 5, my driver was returning to Durban from doing a delivery in Richards Bay with a five metre trailer in tow, when the car broke down on the freeway near Ballito. It was 5.45pm when he phoned me and we called the AA to ask them to tow the car away.
My problem was where to take the car at that time of the evening. I phoned a friend in Maidstone to get advice and he suggested Umhlali Nissan, as the vehicle is a Nissan. I called them – not expecting to have the phone answered at that time of day – and to my surprise the call was answered.
I left my cell phone number with them and left Durban to go and collect the trailer and the driver. About 15 minuets later I got a call from the workshop manager, Mr Govender, to say that he and a mechanic were at the workshop and would go to the freeway to see if they were able to help us there. I was not expecting this kind of help and was most grateful for the offer.
When I arrived at the vehicle, they were already there and had worked out what the problem was. When I then contacted the AA to see how long they would be they said were still trying to locate a flatbed tow truck for us. Mr Govender then went back to their workshop, collected a battery and got the vehicle to their workshop where they replaced a broken bolt and a damaged fan belt. They did a test drive before giving me the car to go home. As I am a senior citizen they also phoned me to see that I got back home safely.
It was after 8pm when I left these two very considerate and caring gentlemen, who did not have to come to the freeway in the rain to help a total stranger but could have gone home to their families and let the AA tow the vehicle to their workshop and attend to it in the morning. They sorted out what I thought was going to be a nightmare.
Most of the letters one reads in the papers nowadays are full of negative stories so I felt it necessary to let people know that there are still those who will go beyond the call of duty.
Thank you Mr Govender and Mr Sahdew for your very kind assistance , I am most grateful.
