I wonder how many drivers have faced the same problem regarding uninsured drivers.
On Wednesday December 18, while driving on Madeleine Drive in Ballito, the driver of vehicle registration ND 319198 that was in front of me suddenly stopped in the middle of the road.
Thinking that the vehicle may have stalled, I waited a few seconds but then without warning the vehicle reversed backwards towards me. I hooted to warn the driver but the vehicle did not stop and the tow bar on the vehicle went through my air conditioner and radiator.
The driver, by the name of Rhyno, was most apologetic and stated that he saw a woman walking in a side street and decided to see if she needed a lift. He stated that he would pay for the damage so I proceeded to obtain quotes and informed him that the average prices quoted were around R8 000.
He now informed me that he was also unemployed and did not have any money but being an honest person he would pay once he was employed.
I asked him to sign an agreement to this affect and he then told me that everything he told me was not admissible as proof that he was responsible and as far as he was concerned I was at fault. I presume this means that I should not drive on the roads when he is around and that he is free to drive as he wishes.
I am a pensioner and to cut a long story short, I am now out of pocket for an insurance excess of R3 600 and have lost a no claim bonus of R1100. I also do not have any transport until the New Year. I am sure this “honest person” has no conscience and will continue through life only concerned with himself.
