It is not something new. Cape Town started this years ago and sits with a budget of millions. This is the reason why Cape Town is so busy with tourism. Florida Road in Durban have started an UIP initiative as well and this has turned the area around. Do yourself a favour and drive along that area, it is simply great.
The initiative is also not restricted to SA alone as you will find the concept is used all over the world.  The monies the council gets from taxes is just not enough to sustain or improve the lives of those already living in upmarket areas. Most of our tax monies go to those living in poverty.
Whilst many people are kicking against these facts, it will not change in the near future just because it is simply not financially possible, unless government lifts tax by an additional 25%.
The very good thing about this initiative is that the councils have bought into the concept and are now pumping money into it as well. There are no more arguments between council and ratepayers, as the buffer between them is the UIP. Once again, Brian can be my witness on how this has changed in Umhlanga.
There is no doubt that Ballito will only benefit from this project.
