Apropos the never ending road works on the highway between Ballito and Umhlanga – as nothing actually gets done, I have come to the conclusion that this is in fact a school for prospective road workers.
The most vital part of this training is learning to correctly place ‘the man having difficulty with an umbrella’ sign, and the placement of superfluous traffic cones.
The syllabus then includes: The art of ‘leaning’ – against a wall (if available) but more likely to be on a shovel, and the advanced course for the more ambitious, shovel leaning with one foot on the shovel, and one on the ground (a good sense of balance required for this).
Standing around: Small and large groups are taught to stand around ‘looking’ as if they are about to do something useful.
An advanced course available for those wishing to stand around and watch one person actually doing some work. This course also includes walking around with an appropriate tool over the shoulder.
Red flag handling also included, for the less than energetic pupil. Included in this course for the more fashion conscious, is the art of work appropriate clothing layering, a large number of ‘Oros’ men can be seen on most work sites.
Another addition to this course is hard hat balancing – only pupils with several means of covering their heads need apply.
Could be I am completely wrong, but until I travel that road and actually see something different, this is the only conclusion I can come to.
