I would like to place on record that I personally have nothing against our leaders having bodyguards but the speaker of Ilembe District Municipality is abusing the system.
I do not think that the speaker sleeps at night because every time I am working night shift I see him, past the middle of the night with his two unchanged bodyguards in a black Jeep.
My questions are:
Are municipal cars allowed to be used past the middle of the night until the morning everyday?
Do these bodyguards get paid overtime, if they do, who pays them because it is not municipality hours after twelve midnight? If they are not paid overtime then are their rights being being abused?
Do these bodyguards have families who need to spend time with them or is it only the speaker’s rights to fulfil only his needs while his right hand men are being abused?
If his life is threatened that much then why is he driving around at night?
Why does he not drive around on his own on weekends like mayors and other speakers in the region? Or is he using his protection to show off?
Is he not breaking labour laws by doing this because his bodyguards are working from sunrise until the next morning?
Why is he using the same bodyguards from Monday to Sunday? How are they supposed to perform their duties if they are not given any time to rest?
The district municipality must let the public know from what time to when these executive vehicles must be used because clearly the way they are being used at the moment is a waste of taxpayers money.

Ilembe director of corporate governance Yvonne Mathonsi responds:
The iLembe District Municipality council is unable to respond to the allegations brought forward reason being that the vehicle the author refers to is not part of our fleet.
Also, the iLembe District Municipality – as a sphere of government – cannot discuss the security of its political bearers, be it the Speaker, the Mayor or the Deputy Mayor, with the media for obvious reasons. We also cannot discuss the contractual agreement we have with our staff.
