Further to the release of the two foreign nationals who were positively linked to house breaking, armed robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder etc in Hewitt Road, I wish to enquire what recourse do we as a community in shock have and who is to account for the release of these two suspects without any charges?
My house in Hewitt Road was hit four times in 2013 and the Umhlali police attended these robberies, but to date we have not received any feedback on the cases opened. Some of the items recovered when these two were caught have been directly linked to the robberies at 33 Hewitt Road.
It has taken the Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch, who as a matter of interest are all volunteers to the organisation, and Mr Labidi of IPSS, four months to finally track down these criminals who have plagued our area for the greater part of 2013 and yet it takes the SAP an instant to release them without charges.
If you thought the house-breaking crimes were not enough, surely foreign nationals without papers should be an offence on its own.
The release of these wo has placed the community at significant risk and will the SAP take responsibility for their next crime or murder?
Will the SAP accept responsibility for the additional security installed by home owners and the employment of security guards etc, because you find it easier to release the suspects without charges than to charge them for the crimes committed.
Where do the law abiding citizens of this country who have been “terrorised” (two families have left their homes due to the actions of these two suspects) by these two suspects seek justice if we cannot rely on the support of the SAP to do their jobs properly. The actions of the police allowing the release of these suspects clearly indicates that the SAP are not on the law abiding citizen’s side and that they have absolutely no care to protect life and property.
We cannot accept this type of incompetence and corruption any longer and we need answers.
As an extremely concerned home owner in Hewitt Road I demand answers and protection from the SAP from future crime in the area.

Umhlali SAPS station commander, Colonel SB Zondi responds:
“Unfortunately I am not in a position to comment as this particular category of crime is investigated by the KwaDukuza Cluster Office.”
We forwarded the letter to the KwaDukuza cluster office and no response was received.
