Does pothole-filling need an insider?

“Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This phrase was first used in 1770 by William Pitt to the UK House of Lords. There is a reason why, 244 years later, this phrase is still used: it is true. We see it with ZANU-PF in Zimbabwe. We see it up the road in Nkandla. First: Jim Brown’s letter …

First: Jim Brown’s letter in the Courier, “Direction of the peeing is vote-decider” is cheap political advertising. I have lived in this town my whole life, I know and respect both Rigby Heenan and Jim Brown.
I have always been under the impression that Jim is an ANC member. I also knew that Rigby was campaigning as ANC councillor for Ward 22 before one poster had gone up. I have no doubt that Jim was aware Rigby was campaigning long before he saw the first poster, as he so dramatically describes!
Second: what do we want from our municipality and local government? To keep our street lights working and pot holes filled? To achieve that do we need to get a white male ANC councillor to try and persuade the “ANC” Ilembe municipality from within to provide for the “white” ward 22 – as Jim subtley implies? Or, as rate payers are we entitled to these services?
The only way we can ensure these services is by diverse party representation at municipal level and not allowing absolute power. I hope, and urge Ward 22 to go out and vote for anyone but the ANC.
