In a world of fae, vampires and shifters, where wishes can be bought and bargained for, Elle is human, bound to her stepmother by a slave charm. Her only hope at freedom is to wish for it. But the Godmother rules the illegal wish trade, and the price she demands is steep. Is Elle willing to pay it?
Talented author Rachel Morgan, who grew up in Maidstone and matriculated from Crawford North Coast, is in the process of releasing her latest novel City of Wishes – A Cinderella retelling, in an exciting format.
Like a TV series, Morgan is releasing ‘episodes’ of the novel bi-monthly as eBooks and her fans are eating up the story with relish. The first episode, The Memory Thief, went live on 26 April and best of all, it’s free! You can download it from Amazon, Apple iTunes, Google Play, Kobo and Nook.
The next two episodes have since been released (retailing for $3.44 each for the eBook) and the next one is due 14 June. I binge read the first three episodes late into the night after each release. This Cinderella story is quite apart from the original you know, but there are enough nods to the fairy-tale to make it delightfully relateable.
Aimed at young adults, the style is easy to read, with a great mix of action, intrigue, romance and fantasy.
The story is set in a gritty urban futuristic world where humans are the least powerful of the four High Races and while human slavery is no longer in force by law, neither is it frowned upon.
Elle is the type of girl who would rather wear her combat-style boots than glass slippers. She is determined to free herself and her step-sister from their cruel step mother, but her path to freedom will not be an easy one. Especially since she has stumbled into a group of dangerous vampires and their plot to over throw the fae king.
Rachel Morgan has a deft skill at captivating her audience with a fast-paced, spell-binding story. The only drawback being the wait for the release of the next installment on 14 June.
