#Letter: Unanswered questions

"While we are cognizant of the impact the floods have had on infrastructure in general, it is imperative that local government swiftly gets into action to create a conducive environment for residents to live and work in" - Privi Makhan.

Privi Makhan, Infrastructure and Technical Portfolio Committee spokesperson – Democratic Alliance KwaDukuza, writes:

Following the sporadic outages currently plaguing parts of KwaDukuza, the Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza has formally written to the KDM Electricity Business Unit, requesting they take ward structures into their confidence by providing a summary of the state of electricity infrastructure following the recent floods.

To date, most of the communication received has been through the call centre.

While we are cognizant of the impact the floods have had on infrastructure in general, it is imperative that local government swiftly gets into action to create a conducive environment for residents to live and work in.

As such, we have asked to be fully appraised on:

The number of substations severely compromised during the floods?

Apart from the Chakas Rock transformer that caught alight on April 13, were there any similar incidents on the southern network.

What is the cause of the intermittent outages? If these are related to water ingress, we will need to communicate this to our communities.

If the intermittent outages are being caused by a bigger issue on the network, we will need an urgent engagement with the affected ward structures and affected stakeholders, in order to be fully informed.

The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza will continue to effect our oversight on this critical service delivery business unit, to ensure our communities, receive much needed answers.
