Blythedale resident Jenni Ruttledge writes:
How could two separate firework displays (the first at around 8pm, the second at midnight for about 30 minutes on December 31) have been permitted to take place on the beach north of the Blythedale Coastal Resort – a forested area as well as next to a security fenced “eco” estate?
Apart from all the naturally occurring wildlife species along the coastal belt, the estate has introduced impala and there would most likely have been pregnant ewes as well as newborn calves at this time.
They would have tried to escape but would have been unable to do so.
Already wildlife in the forest (duiker, porcupines, mongoose etc) are subjected to snares and traps, yet somehow humans, for the pure purpose of their entertainment, wish to inflict more terror, pain and suffering on the birds and animals that do remain in our ever decreasing natural areas.
It was totally shameful, cruel, selfish and despicable.
Whoever was responsible for these two firework events could not have been ignorant of the impact that explosions, flashes and loud bangs have on wildlife?
The perpetrators know who they are. But will they own up to these illegal acts and face the consequences?
The Courier has asked KwaDukuza municipality to clarify whether these firework displays had the necessary permissions granted by the municipality or if they were performed illegally – Editor
