#Letter: Glenhills resident pleads for answers as daily water cuts continue

KwaDukuza water woes spark renewed outrage.

KwaDukuza resident Omesh Maharaj writes: A few years ago, I wrote a letter, which was published in your esteemed newspaper, regarding the continuous water outages we have been experiencing every single morning for the past 23 years.

I live in Sagittarius Close, Glenhills, KwaDukuza. At that time, you interviewed Elias Bhengu from iLembe District Municipality (IDM), and his answer was that they were busy with the new water pipeline in Glenhills and the issue would be resolved once the pipeline project was completed.

It is going on two years now since the upgrade project was completed, yet the problem persists. We on Sagittarius Close are still experiencing water outages every morning from around 5am to 11am.

Last Wednesday (July 2), Umgeni Water shut off the supply to the whole of KwaDukuza due to a major leak on the main pipeline, but our water on Sagittarius Close had already stopped on Tuesday morning (July 1) at around 5am.

Up until the writing of this letter on Sunday (July 6), we have not received a single drop of water in our taps, yet other roads around us have water.

I personally contacted our councillors, who said they informed IDM’s technical manager and director, but have not had any updates or feedback from them. Aside from the lack of water from our taps, no water tankers were dispatched, even though the councillors requested IDM to send tankers.

It seems as though IDM does not care about us, the honest, hardworking ratepayers of KwaDukuza. It would be much appreciated if you could publish my letter to bring some awareness to our plight. I understand that we are not the only ones battling with IDM regarding water outages, and I sympathise with everyone who is experiencing this problem. IDM had not responded at the time of publication.
