#Letter: Ballito car licence renewal frustration prompts questions

Ballito resident Gwenda Gilder questions why basic services remain out of reach.

Ballito resident Gwenda Gilder writes:

My friend and I went to renew our car licences on Monday morning.

I wonder if people are aware that a cashier has to be sent from Stanger. There was no cashier on duty that day and we were told to go to Stanger instead.

Fortunately, we were able to go to Spar and renew our licences there. However, this came at an extra cost of R180 per transaction.

Did you know that the municipal machines are set up to process renewals for only 11 months instead of a full year? You have to specifically ask for a 12-month renewal, this applies at Spar too.
We were fortunate to be helped by a cheerful and helpful lady at Spar, but it raises the question: why should this be the case?

What about people who cannot afford the extra R180? It’s not right that basic services are unavailable and that residents must either travel far or pay more for something that should be straightforward and accessible.
