After much speculation that the 2016 Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 Durban might be cancelled, Ironman South Africa has announced next year’s event will take place on November 2.
The future of the lucrative sporting event was in question when the Ethekwini municipality, after agreeing in principle to host the 2016 event, neglected to sign the confirmation letter.
The confirmation letter is a pre-requisite for Ironman South Africa to schedule an event on the race calendar.
The Durban leg of the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 series will take place on Sunday, June 19 at Suncoast, Durban.
June is the best possible time for favourable weather conditions in South Africa’s “winter capital”, as Keith Bowler, managing director of Ironman South Africa affectionately calls Durban.
The event debuted this year with a field of 3000 athletes, making it the biggest triathlon event ever to take place in Durban.
“The Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 Durban has quickly become one of the most popular races in South Africa. Since this year’s inaugural event, we have been inundated with queries about the 2016 race and we are pleased to be able to announce the date,” said Bowler.
Entries open Thursday, December 3 at 2 pm.
“After the success of the inaugural event, entries are expected to sell fast with an even larger local contingent from Durban,” said Bowler.
The 1.4 kilometre swim leg starts at Snake Park Beach and ends at Country Club Beach on the Durban beach front.
The 90.1 bike leg follows the M4 from Suncoast up to the first Zimbali circle where athletes turn back towards Durban.
The final section of the cycle route snakes through Durban North and takes athletes to the Battery Beach circle and into the transition area at Suncoast.
The final hurdle is a 21.1 kilometre run that takes athletes around two laps of the Durban promenade to the finish arch at the VIP area on the promenade in front of the Suncoast Amphitheater.
Tsogo Sun is the official accommodation partner to the event and will be running special offers on accommodation to all registered athletes.
