When you see a man running up the hills of Maphumulo with an orange in his hand, then you will know it is Thokozani Mbeje training for his next race.
He said he enjoys carrying the orange, and is reluctant to hit the road without one, but he only eats it once training is complete.
The 33-year-old has become a well known athlete in and around Es’namfini area over the past 23 years. He has taken part in more than ten marathons across the province, and has crossed the finish line of the Comrades Marathon twice.
He trains from Monday to Thursday covering 15km and runs up to 25km on Sundays.
Despite his many silver and bronze medals the gold still eludes him.
“I have not yet won a race but I believe that one day I will win and represent my province on a national level,” said Mbeje.
He said he would like to pass his running knowledge on to the younger generation of Maphumulo.
“I would like to see young people in my area joining me for training. I already have two guys who train with me. I want the kids who are 15 years and older to join me, but even adults are welcome to join,” said Mbeje.
Mbeje is running for the Ntunjambili Athletics Club in Kranskop between Maphumulo and Greytown.
He is unemployed and finds it challenging to afford his running kit.
If you would like to join him for training or to donate running clothes or shoes contact Mbeje on 083 973 7499.
