Speed for need

The annual Ballito Speedster once again lit up Ballito's streets last week as dozens of eager runners tackled the 4km course

Lining up on the makeshift start line near Mo- Zam- Bik restaurant, runners and walkers had their tekkies tied securely as they eagerly awaited the signal to set off.

This is the Speedster’s 11th year running and it does not look like slowing down anytime soon.

When all was said and done, Sibusiso Dube took top spot for the men in 13 minutes 32 seconds while Delia Jay was the first lady over the line in 16 minutes 40 seconds.

Second and third in the men’s race were Petros Zweni and Mfanafuthi Manhique. Robyn Smith and Jean Mackinnon took second and 3rd for the ladies.

The official ‘mother’ of the Speedster, Bev Livingstone said the proceeds from this year’s Speedster would go towards Sables Creatures.

“The work they are doing in the rural areas is not easy, and they look after the most vulnerable creatures on the Dolphin Coast, the ones without a voice.”

After the race, runners headed down to Mo-Zam-Bik Restaurant for some snacks and a well deserved refreshment.

Overall, R15 000 was raised for Sables Creatures, including R3000 from a painting by Steve van der Schyff which was auctioned.

Livingstone thanked everyone who made the Speedster possible, including Mo-Zam-Bik, RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors, Delia Jay Attorneys and the North Coast Courier.
