Gromms rip it up in Umhlanga

The next big event being held will be the Lizzard Hurricane KZN Surfing Champs from December 1-3 at Bronze Beach.

Dolphin Coast gromms Gabi Lailvaux and Julian Carbonal were crowned the U16 and U12 winners of the Umhlanga Wave Wizards Club final event recently.

There were close on 75 entries in the final event of the 2017 series, where competitors and spectators were treated to perfect summer weather with a light sea breeze.

The spring tides brought 2-3 ft. waves in the early afternoon making it ‘rippable’ and fun for the surfers while the high tide at Bronze Beach lent an amphitheatre type effect to proceedings.

The ocean was tricky during the U12 boys final on the changing tides, but Carbonal showed good form to beat his rivals with a clear win and total of 11.5 points.

Owen Slack, Luc Lepront and Thor Knutsen placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.

Meanwhile, Lailvaux took part in both the Open Ladies and U16 girls’ events.

Unfortunately she could not pip Kat Steffan and Olivia Brand in the open category and ended up coming third. However, she went on to win the U16 girls ahead of Olivia Izzard, Maya Potgieter and Gaby Herbst.

Club Chairman Jestyn Viljoen said it was a great day of surfing.

“Umhlanga Bronze Beach showed off its great weather and waves for our final club event. It was so special to see surfers and families all enjoying the sun and sea in a safe, clean environment,” he said.

“There is a Hawaiian Proverb: ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. Wave Wizards Surf Club is a great platform for young kids to learn from the masters. Thanks to everyone involved for a tremendously successful day.”
