Curro Salt Rock and Dolphin Coast Striders launch distance running project
The partnership hopes to offer the next generation of local runners top-class training.
Curro Salt Rock and the Dolphin Coast Striders have joined forces to nurture promising young distance runners.
The initiative, known as the Dolphin Coast Distance Project (DCDP), was launched last week and aims to develop runners through a structured athletics programme. Head of primary school sport at Curro, Phelelani Mthembu, will lead the programme.
His vision is to create an environment where athletes receive the professional guidance needed to grow.
“Our mission extends beyond immediate performance,” said Mthembu. “We are committed to scouting talent and developing a system that identifies promising young athletes and maximises their potential.”

The DCDP kicked off with invited athletes from Curro primary and high school, Umhlali Preparatory School and Penzance Primary, taking part in their first training run through Ballito.
Eight of the 10 athletes have already qualified for the upcoming KZN Provincial Championships. Training, which is free, will include morning road sessions, complemented by structured track work at Curro Salt Rock and Kings Park Stadium.

Mthembu said the school is proud to contribute to the future of athletics in the region.
“We are especially grateful to the Dolphin Coast Striders for allowing this project to come to life and for providing the necessary support to ensure success,” he said.
“With this strong backing and clear development pathway, we believe this initiative can make a lasting impact.”
Dolphin Coast Striders captain Nic Acampora echoed this enthusiasm.
“This programme is a brilliant idea,” said Acampora.
“At the Dolphin Coast Striders, we have always looked at creating something unique and impactful within our running community. We are fully committed to working hard to ensure that these athletes are well taken care of and supported in every aspect of their development.”
