Ballito Dolphins end losing streak with dramatic home victory

A try in the last two minutes secured the first win of the season.

A dramatic late try saw the Ballito Dolphins secure their first win of the season, edging the South Coast Warriors 22-17 on Saturday at Oaklands Equestrian Estate.

Trailing by two points with less than two minutes remaining, the Dolphins looked set for another narrow defeat. However, a crucial turnover deep inside their own 22 sparked one final attacking opportunity.

The Ballito Dolphins 2nd XV also tasted victory last Saturday.

Quick hands and slick handling shifted the ball wide, releasing winger Asanda Nduku, who sprinted 60m down the touchline to score the match-winning try and ignite jubilant celebrations among the home supporters.

Earlier tries from Marvin Chakanyuka, Wandile Kushu and Jakez Kritzinger kept the Dolphins in contention in what proved to be a gripping encounter.

The victory ends a difficult run for the Dolphins, who had opened their campaign with four consecutive losses since mid-April.

Those included a home defeat to Amanzimtoti (28-8) and away losses to Kokstad (24-7), Maritzburg (24-19) and Hluhluwe (37-20).

The result not only breaks their losing streak but also lifts the team off the bottom of the KZN Club Rugby First Division South table.

There was further cause for celebration as the Dolphins’ second team also claimed victory, beating the Warriors 19-15.

Head coach Craig Dawson praised the resilience and determination of his youthful squad.

“It was a cracking game and a special win against a top side,” said Dawson.

“The win was well deserved. We dug deep and showed a lot of character. I cannot fault any of my players, especially the youngsters, who really stood up against a big team.”

Kritzinger, known as ‘The Joker’ for his fancy footwork and ability to slot into any backline position with ease, was emotional after the final whistle, particularly following a heartfelt moment with a young supporter asking for an autograph.

Prop Wandile Kushu crashes over in the corner.

“This boy will never know how much this meant to me,” he said.

“Playing for this jersey and this team makes us role models for so many young boys, and we don’t realise it until moments like this. This is why I play the game.”

The Dolphins will look to build on this momentum when they travel to face Amanzimtoti this Saturday, aiming for back-to-back victories as they head into the second half of the season.
