Curro Salt Rock’s high school golf team returned triumphant from the prestigious Westville Boys’ High School Sun City Golf Festival earlier this month.

Held annually in the Pilanesberg National Park, the Westville Sun City Golf Festival took place from April 29 to May 2. After finishing in an impressive fourth last year, Curro (+13) shot to a memorable title this time around, beating Paul Roos A (+21) by eight strokes.

Inspired by a chance meeting with double World Cup-winning Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus while out to dinner, the school finished first against many of South Africa’s most illustrious schools.

One hundred and eighty competitors from 32 schools competed over four days at the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Courses. Curro claimed the Team Net Score title and team captain Tamika Wolfe (17) reigned supreme, winning the Ladies’ title (+9).

At the same time, twin brothers Hiratio (2nd) and Kyden Ward (8th) finished in the top 10 of the Individual Net Score competition, with Hiratio (-10) claiming the runner-up spot.

“Winning the Team Nett Score is an absolutely incredible feeling; we are so proud of Hiratio,” said Wolfe.

“It is such a sense of pride and accomplishment, with all the hours of practice finally paying off. Taking home the title in the ladies’ section makes winning even more special. Knowing that I worked hard to achieve such a great result made me feel proud, but captaining the team to victory was the cherry on top!”

Coach Eugene “Monty” Montgomery praised his young team, noting that the Ward twins flew back mid-tournament to KZN to participate in provincial age-group rugby trials, returning the following day in time to tee off.

“I’m proud of my team, especially Tamika, whose leadership and performance were exceptional. Their focus – especially the twins – dedication, discipline and commitment paid off,” he said.
The former Curro headmaster added that the pep-talk given by coach Rassie helped focus the players.

“He was so good and accommodating with the kids, not like some of his Bok team-talks,” laughed Monty.

“I think the team really took on board his advice, which helped their collective performance.”
