Art lovers, get ready for a bright, breathtaking visual feast at the “Wayward Dreams” exhibition, opening at the Lifestyle Center’s Imbizo Gallery on January 7.
The exhibition features seven top South African artists – four sculptors, two painters and a wood-cut artist.
Isabel Roos, curator and owner of Imbizo Gallery said there has been a wonderful renewed interest in sculpture recently.
“Contemporary homes are very often ‘open plan’ with large windows and limited wall space. Sculpture is the perfect art solution for these areas,” said Roos.
Roos loves the “wonderful poetic quality” of Marke Meyer’s bronze sculptures, which she said contains an incredible lightness about them.
Carl Roberts will show his extraordinary works from found natural materials such as wood, stone and coral.
Gerhard van Eck on the other hand uses concrete and acrylic resin in his creations.
“His pieces have become known for their ability to capture inherent emotion and energy,” said Roos.
Elizabeth Balcomb’s sculptures focus on the feminine, using the language of the Renaissance to explore and expose aspects of human nature.
Besides Balcomb, Roos said there are two bold, talented and fearless women painters included in this exhibition – Terri Broll and Hannetjie de Clercq.
Broll enjoys working with oil and wax to create an ambiguous texture that suggests images that are both disturbing and humorous.
“Hannetjie’s pieces show a contrast of emotions – sometimes light-hearted and yet often tinged with a sense of sadness,” said Roos.
The late Isaac Sithole’s collection of glowing woodcuts showing the simple, yet humorous village life will also be at the exhibition.
Bubbly actress and storyteller Barbie Meyer will open the exhibition at 6.30pm, where you can meet the artists and chat over a glass of wine.
