Hot SA band, Monark on winter tour

Monark achieved industry recognition winning the MK 2014 Award for Best Newcomer, along with being chosen as one of the selections in the iTunes’ exclusive New Artist in 2014 campaign.

Hot new South African band, Monark, is going on a Barnyard Winter Tour and will be performing at the Gateway venue in Durban on Tuesday,  June 7.

Home to some of South Africa’s most renowned legendary bands, Potchefstroom delivered their latest offering to the South African music scene – Monark – in May 2013 when the four-piece pop/rock band emerged with their first single, Smiling.

The band was formed when producer Ewald Jansen van Rensburg teamed up with friend and vocalist, Eugene Coetzer.

For a couple of years they developed and worked towards finding the specific sound they were after and once they had discovered it, they gathered together the musicians that were needed to grow and perform the music on a live scale, with Deon de Klerk joining the band on Bass Guitar and Graeme Wuth on Drums.

The band officially formed in August 2012, intent on making popular, yet tastefully engineered music with a cinematic feel and a musical twist of realism.

At the 2015 SAMAs (South African Music Awards), the band were nominated for Best Pop Album, as well as Record Of The Year, along with a nomination for Ewald Jansen van Rensburg for Best Producer for the Negatives album.

Opening for Monark on their Barnyard tour will be proudly Durban boy, Majozi.

At the age of thirteen, he started to teach himself guitar, which eventually led to him studying a foundation course in jazz and popular music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

He describes his music as being Indie-folk with subtle influences of electro and attributes his faith as one of his musical inspirations.

In 2013, he released his first EP, Marvelous Light, which was recorded and produced by Warren Meyer of Doppler Studios. The album made it to No 9 overall on the South African iTunes chart and No 1 in the Singer/Songwriter category.

Audience members can also meet the artists in the bar after the show to buy paraphernalia and get autographs.

Tickets are R150 per person, and seating will be as for normal shows, with no standing room.
