LISTEN: Stellar IEB results for Fatima and Reddam
Northglen News chats to learners from Our Lady of Fatima and Reddam House Umhlanga following the release of the IEB results.
THE Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has announced a pass rate (98.82 per cent). A total of 11818 full-time and 779 part-time candidates from 227 examination centres across Southern Africa wrote the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in October and November 2019.
This is an increase from 2018 when there were 11 514 full-time candidates and 858 part-time candidates.
Northglen News caught up with learners from Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School and Reddam House Umhlanga to chat about their results.
Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School
Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School principal Dee Horsfall, said she was truly delighted by the results of the Class of 2019.
“A total of 46 of the cohort of 47 achieving a Bachelor Degree Pass. 72 per cent of our candidates achieved A or B aggregates, and 36 per cent of all subject results earned were distinctions. That 91 per cent of all our results were A, B or C marks speaks to the drive and self-belief of each girl who seized the opportunity to achieve her academic ‘personal bests’.
“Our Dux, Tannah Swart, achieved 7 A’s as did Runner-up to Dux, Courtney Hill, who was placed in the top 1 per cent of Geography candidates with her mark of 92 per cent . Courtney Preston-Whyte’s 7 distinctions included 92 per cent for Business Studies, placing her in the top 1 per cent nationally. Bianca Brakspear’s 92 per cent (see in gallery below) for History and Lexa Gorlei’s 95 per cent for Mathematical Literacy also placed them in the top 1 per cent nationally for these subjects,” she said.
Reddam House Umhlanga
Reddam House Umhlanga matriculants have maintained last year’s exceptional IEB NSC results obtaining a 100 per cent pass rate and a 100 per cent Bachelor’s Degree pass rate.
What is more is the school had 80 subject A’s, a group average of 70% and four rankings in the top 1 per cent of candidates per subject nationally. Incredibly, 29 per cent of Mathematics students obtained a distinction (compared to the IEB distinction rate of 25 per cent ) while 55 per cent of Visual Art students obtained a distinction (compared to the IEB distinction rate of 30 per cent).

School principal, Adam Rogers, said he was proud of the class of 2019’s results.
“In 2017, our first set of matrics set an excellent standard by achieving not only a 100 per cent matric pass but also a 100 per cent Bachelor’s Degree Pass rate as well. It has been most affirming that the matric classes of 2018 and 2019 have continued this trend. This means that every Reddam House Umhlanga Matric student, for the past three years, has qualified to be able to apply for tertiary study,” he said.
