Rescue efforts continue for missing swimmer in uMdloti

The victim, a 22-year-old man, was swept out to sea by a freak wave in uMdloti on Monday.

SEARCH and recovery operations are stretching into a second day after a swimmer was swept out to sea in uMdloti.

Members of the SAPS Search & Rescue Unit are looking for a 22-year-old man who is presumed to have drowned on Monday (June 15).

According to Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit SA (RUSA), Bandile Ntaka was initially rescued by lifeguards after getting into difficulties while swimming at uMdloti when he was swept away by a freak wave minutes later.

“The family and a local councillor arrived at RUSA after learning of the incident, requesting assistance. The R44 Helicopter was deployed to assist in locating the body after heavy winds subsided,” he said. 

Balram added that recovery efforts were  abandoned at 17:15 on Monday when darkness set in.
