City confirms delay in Old North Coast Road upgrade
The upgrade project, which is being carried out in two phases, entails the upgrading and widening of Old North Coast Road.
THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that a new date will be set for the completion of the first phase of the Old North Coast Road upgrade project following another delay.
The news comes after the City approved an additional R27m to help complete the project in Ward 110.
The project, which is being carried out in two phases, entails the upgrading and widening of Old North Coast Road from a single-lane, one-way carriageway into a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

The upgrade also includes the construction of a median, sidewalks, and side retaining walls to accommodate increased traffic volumes generated because of ongoing developments within the area.
In a comment to Northglen News, the City’s marketing and communications director, Mandla Nsele, said the first phase of the project was due to be completed at the end of June, however, a new date will be chosen.
“The City confirms that the project has experienced several implementation challenges and delays. These include the relocation of existing services and utilities, an embankment collapse which required the design and construction of specialised retaining wall structures, and periods of adverse weather conditions resulting in rain-related delays. The anticipated completion date was initially scheduled for 22 June 2026; however, due to programme constraints, a revised completion date will be communicated in due course,” he said.
Nsele confirmed the first phase of the project falls under the City’s jurisdiction, while the second phase is being undertaken in partnership with the KZN Department of Transport.
