Body of missing swimmer washes up in uMdloti

Bandile Ntaka had been missing since Monday (June 15) when he was swept into the ocean after a freak wave hit him.

THE body of a missing 22-year-old swimmer has been recovered after it washed up in the vicinity of North Beach Road in uMldoti on Thursday night (June 18).

Metro Police Search and Rescue recovered the body of Bandile Ntaka, who was washed away by a freak wave on Monday while swimming with friends.

Ntaka was swimming with his friends on Monday afternoon (June 15) when he got into difficulty.

He was initially rescued by lifeguards but was then swept away by a freak wave minutes later.

According to Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security, anglers spotted the body of a man floating in the water just after 19:00.

A security officer was notified and he, together with his colleagues, entered the water and recovered the deceased.

Ntaka’s family positively identified his body.

The search was co-ordinated by Metro Police Search and Rescue Unit and the SAPS Search & Rescue Unit.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) also helped in the search for the missing man following the incident.

“At the request of the family, the RUSA Robinson R44 Helicopter was deployed for three consecutive days in an effort to locate and recover his body,” explained RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.
