Sandwich drive in Durban North fills tummies

The drive was spearheaded by The Robin Hood Foundation and volunteers to prepare sandwiches that will be distributed to vulnerable children.

MORE than 2 000 sandwiches were made in a few hours when volunteers, businesses and community members joined forces to support those in need through The Robin Hood Foundation sandwich drive, held at Northwood Crusaders recently.

The initiative, held in partnership with The Robin Hood Foundation and Araujo Attorneys, saw volunteers working assembly-line style to prepare sandwiches that will be distributed to vulnerable children and families through Domino Foundation feeding programmes.

The Robin Hood Foundation co-ordinator, Charlotte Edgar, said the organisation hosts sandwich-making drives regularly, with schools, businesses and community groups contributing bread, peanut butter and fundraising efforts.

“Many of the children who receive these sandwiches rely on them as one of the only meals they will get during the day. We hear heartbreaking stories regularly, which is why these drives are so important,” she said.

The bread for the latest drive was donated by BB Bakery, while funds raised helped purchase peanut butter and other sandwich fillings.

Edgar said Domino Foundation was chosen as the beneficiary because of its extensive feeding programme.

Araujo Attorneys’ Daniela Boonzaier said the firm was eager to get involved.

“We have worked with The Robin Hood Foundation before and have seen the need in our communities. We are always willing to assist where we can,” she said

Boonzaier said the partnership with Domino Foundation was particularly meaningful as the organisation provides about 500 sandwiches daily to those in need.

“It is important that children and families have access to a meal. We also wanted to get the North Durban community involved and show how much can be achieved when people work together for a good cause,”
she said.

The organisers thanked all the volunteers and donors whose contributions helped make the drive a success. To get involved email info@robinhoodfoundation.co.za or call 082 864 5729.
