UPDATE: No fatalities in Pretoria N1 multiple vehicle crash

Tshwane emergency services say a consolidated figure of 13 vehicles were involved in the crash and one person with critical injuries was airlifted to hospital.

No fatalities were recorded on the scene of a multi-vehicle crash involving a truck, bus, taxi and other vehicles on the N1 highway in Pretoria on Saturday night, but one person is in hospital with critical injuries.

Giving an update on the crash that saw emergency services having a busy night, Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said after having consolidated all information there were no fatalities at the scene of the accident.

“When reports came in, it was initially reported that around 20 vehicles, including a bus, a truck and a taxi, were involved,” Mabaso said.

“After struggling to reach the centre of the accident, emergency services were then able to make a further assessment along with law enforcement agencies. They were able to conclude that 13 vehicles were involved,” he said.

A bus carrying passengers was also involved in the accident.

“Fortunately, there were no fatalities recorded at the scene. Two patients were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

“One patient was airlifted to hospital after being extricated from their vehicle by emergency services as well as firefighters.

“The patient is currently being treated for critical injuries,” he said.

The Rekord previously reported that when medics were called to the scene initial reports were that as many as 70 people were involved in the multiple vehicle crash.
Mabaso said he could not confirm the overall number of people involved.

The road was closed for most of Saturday night to allow emergency services to do their work without any delays. It was opened again in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mabaso said the cause of the accident was not yet clear and law enforcement will be working to determine what it was.
