Crawford opens mammoth astroturf
Crawford College La Lucia recently opened its astroturf.
THE installation of the long-awaited hockey astroturf at Crawford La Lucia has finally been completed, and the field is ready for action.
According to the school, this R7-million hockey turf is not only an asset to the school, but also a benefit to all hockey players and surrounding clubs in the community.
“It has been a dream for Crawford Schools’ hockey players to have an astroturf where they can develop their skills and represent their school,” said Richard Kohne, head of sport at Crawford College La Lucia.
Universally, astroturf surfaces are regarded as the standard for field hockey performance and are the favourite among coaches and players for its playability, durability and low maintenance.
“Astroturf surfaces have transformed the game of field hockey into a fast-paced, highly skilled pursuit,” Kohne added.
The installation of the astroturf started in mid-January 2013. It covers one full-size field (100 x 60 meters), plus a lighting level for night games and a technical area with state of the art video analysis including a small grandstand for 1 000 people.
