Crusaders clinch third place
Marshall Crusaders' loose forwards Buzwe Mpotolu and Lungisa Mlaba, talk to us about the club securing third place on the premier league log after fighting relegation last season.
THE word ‘first’ is special to us. People always document the first time something happens to them-their first love, their first car, their first job. After securing third position (46 points) in the Fidelity Security Moor Cup-Premier Division log this season, Marshall Security’s eightman and flanker, Buzwe Mpothulo (20) and Lungisa Mlaba (21) are not banking on this being just a first, but a way to keep building momentum to eventually lifting the cup. It’s a collective dream shared by both the coaching staff and players.
“To come from a position where we were facing relegation to finishing in the top three is just phenomenal. The team spirit has been fantastic all season long. Everyone gelled really well and we’ve met both Collegians and Rovers, two of our toughest opponents head-on. The team is very proud and to an extent we’ve met some of our goals this season,” Buzwe said.
While club rugby has been written off by many, Lungisa believes it’s where talent is fostered and the future of rugby is groomed. The talented 21-year-old was recently selected for The Sharks U21 Currie Cup squad, a position he insists he would not have been in, had it not been for club rugby. “It’s vital for any young player to play club rugby. You’re exposed to a different level of rugby and as a player’s growth is exponential,” Lungisa said.
Rugby lore normally points to the backs being the top try scorers but the Crusaders are in a unique position with two forwards dominating the tries department. Captain Ronnie Uys (seven tries), and Buzwe (six tries) occupy the top three positions in the charts. “What can I say, the forward really make the hard yards,” Buzwe joked.
The duo have also cited the influence of influential captain, Ronnie Uys, one of the club’s most experienced players and head coach Lodewyk Riekert.
“The skipper and coach have been 100 per cent behind us from the start of the season. We are striving to be number one and it means alot to every single player,” Lungisa said.
With third position secured, the team has now turned its attention to the Murray Cup. Last season the Marshall Security Crusaders lost out in the final but both Buzwe and Lungisa insist this year’s goal is to go all the way.
