Cellphone mast application made
Councillor, Heinz de Boer, calls on Somerset Park residents to take part in the public process for the application to build a cellphone mast in the area.
THE application for the building of a proposed 14m high cellular telecommunications pole, with associated infrastructure, at 2 Ilala Drive, La Lucia, has been submitted.
According to Ward 35 councillor, Heinz de Boer, there are several factors in this proposal that need to be explored fully before work starts.
“Firstly, while there has been some initial comment and concern raised by residents, this has been tempered by a handful of people saying that an MTN mast is warranted in the Somerset Park dip, as the signal is extremely bad there,” De Boer said.
“This is now the chance for people to make their comments and opinions known. As councillor, I have to act in line with the wishes of the community, but at this stage, there have been less than 10 residents who have given me a firm opinion on the proposal,” he added.
De Boer said it is vital that the community gets involved, particularly residents of La Lucia Ridge and Somerset Park.
“While this particular cell-mast, based at the entrance to Somerset Park, is based at a commercially zoned property, it must be noted that MTN has put forward proposals to erect several further mini-masts in the actual Somerset Park residential area.
“Although this environmental impact assessment and public consultation process has yet to begin, residents must be aware that there are further plans for the region,” he said.
Anyone wanting to object to this proposal may do so by lodging a written notice, setting out the grounds of the objections on, or before, 19 August 2013, with the head of development planning environment and management, Development Planning Environment and Management Unit, land use management branch, 327 uMhlanga Rocks Drive, uMhlanga Rocks.
