Gina makes the cut

Our Lady of Fatima School congratulates Gina Laurie for making it in the masters of psychology programme at Rhosed University.

GINA Laurie’s career journey started when she matriculated in 2009 from Our Lady of Fatima School, with a pleasing set of results and a hunger for further knowledge.

She started by studying a BA degree through UNISA, with the intention of majoring in English. This three-year course required her to take two majors, so she reluctantly chose psychology as her second major (never estimating that this would be the start of a great love affair).

By the end of her course it was becoming evident that her passion for psychology outweighed her first initial love, English.

This resulted in her choosing to do her honours in general psychology this year. At the tender age of 21, it is evident that Gina has found her niche in life, thriving in all she experiences, while doing voluntary work at Headway Natal (a brain injury and stroke rehabilitation centre in Westville), and gaining insight and knowledge into the world of psychology.

Gina has recently been accepted into the masters of psychology programme at Rhodes University. The application process is grueling and long, made up of long hours of motivations and paperwork, resulting in 200 applicants being streamlined to 50 applicants countrywide.

Thereafter, Gina had to conduct numerous role-play counselling sessions and participate in many interviews to gain acceptance to the next level of eliminations, which would whittle the number of applicants down to 25. Gina had her youth against her at this stage, however, her perseverance and stamina held her in good stead to enable her to endure many interviews by a panel of seven professionals from the psychology industry to determine the final six counselling psychology applicants to be accepted for the masters in pyschology programme in 2014.

Our Lady of Fatima School congratulates Gina on her successful application for the masters in psychology programme for 2014, more specifically for being the youngest applicant in this programme currently.

She has a tough road ahead of her with the requirement of completing her thesis, course work, community intervention, counselling and final examinations by a panel of professionals.

This will require many grueling and difficult hours, but we have faith that her passion and dedication will contribute to her success.
