Josh takes judo gold

Josh has that golden feeling at national champs.

THERE’S a hint of mischievousness in Josh Hancock’s eyes, but if you look closer, you’ll see he has the heart of a champion.

The Chelsea Preparatory School Grade 3 pupil also has the credentials to back that up. Josh recently won gold in the U9 SA judo champs in Port Elizabeth. It’s a vast improvement from last year, where the Glen Hills’ tyke was knocked out in the early rounds.

“I was ecstatic with the gold. I felt more prepared this year and my sensei and family were right behind me all the way,” he said.

His approach to the champs was best summed up during his first bout.

“My first bout was against a Johannesburg competitor who looked really fierce and I was a little scared, but when the match started, I had him on his back within 10 seconds to seal the win.”

Incredibly in the final, Josh faced his classmate who sits just behind him and whose first name is also Josh. Josh said his dream is to make the South African Olympic squad.
